Sophia Latif is in post as a temporary Project Worker for Communities for Social Change.

She is actively working to:

  • Promote communities for Social Change in Craigmillar and East Edinburgh by networking with the voluntary and statutory organisations.
  • Establish contacts with minority ethnic and the wider white communities to work towards what they want and set targets in achieving this.
  • Organise seminars about available services in the areas and also to map the resources going into these neighbourhoods; to build on what is already in place and working.
  • Organise capacity building training for potential community leaders.
  • Organise an event in collaboration with the Greater Pilton project worker to bring both service users of the East side of Edinburgh and Great Pilton together.
  • Determine means of eliminating factors such as poverty, poor housing conditions, crime, ill health and under achievement in schools as these can all have a negative impact on people's lives which can lead to one being socially excluded and understanding the root causes of these factors.

Sophia has a vast amount of experience of working with the minority ethnic and disadvantaged communities in Edinburgh. She has a solid understanding of the issues relating to under representation and under achievement of people from disadvantaged groups. She has good working experience of involvement in people oriented work with a proven record of being able to influence people.

Sophia believes if community development work can accurately reflect local aspirations and needs and involve local people, it can, in the long term, make a difference to people’s lives. It is with these strong beliefs that she is working towards combating racial and social injustice.

Sophia is currently studying for a Health and Social degree with the Open University which she hopes will enable her furthermore to develop a sound and critical understanding of policy, theory and practice in health and social care.
